I don’t know much about the man they called “Deacon”. He was part of Company G, and he was born in 1922. You can see a picture of his headstone on FindAGrave.com, and it simply says “son”. Because for the young men killed, they didn’t get the chance to have a family, to have children and grandchildren to talk to about their time in the war. He was someone’s boy, and a friend to those who served with. But today there are few, if any, who will remember his name.
Most of the stories I post are in chronological order. I have jumped the order for this one, as today marks the 75th anniversary of his death. The back of the photo of him that is in my grandfather’s album refers to him as “My Buddy Killed in Action”. Today we will remember him.

So sad, but I’m happy that those men lived. I wonder if my cousin Pete Geelhoed knew him?
This was my uncle, he had a twin sister Alberta. I think this picture came from a fellow service man named Sam that contacted my Grandmother. He lived and worked in Muskegon and was a close family friend for years. He served with my uncle and was a friend.
Pete was killed January 2nd.
Thanks for sharing this, he was my great uncle and my father often spoke about him, I wish he here still alive to see this photo as there were few of him.
I’m so happy you found this here. My grandfather considered him a good friend, though I don’t know much about him.
